Nanzikambe (Chamäleon) No1

The first chamaeleon we sight is a so called “elephant-ear-chamaeleon” (Chamaeleo melleri). The kids from the neighbourhood and Frank, the cook climb into the tree to catch it for us. It doesn’t seem to be as happy, as we are. It spits and shows us his black tounge, that would give us a rash, if we touched it.

Arrival at the Polytechnic

Five days after our arrival in malawi, the administrative issues are sorted out in the way, that we can move on for a visit at the Polytechnic (University of Malawi).
The Lecturers, the Librarian, the Secretaries, the Drivers as well, as the Porters are pleased about seeing the old face again. We’re welcome in a very warm way in Malawi

Malawi bo-bo!

Just that everybody can relax: We’ve arrived safely in Blantyre last Saturday. It was just very difficult the last days, to get Internet and a working cell phone number. And monday-thuesday we had some troubles with the immigration offices and our visas. As Switzerland doesn’t belong to the european union, swiss people are treated differently, when entering Malawi. “Teo nana mawa” (Cya tomorrow).

Zimbabwe: throttled Internet

Tonight I found an interesting article at Boingboing about “TelOne”, the biggest Internetprovider in Zimbabwe, that is thotteling the countries bandwith because of unpaid bills.
There is also an article about it on Telepolis (in German Language).

Who or what is Malawi?

A question, that I’m often asked in Switzerland, when I talk about my project is: “What is Malawi? Where’s that?”.
Compared to the hudge continent of Africa, Malawi indeed is a small country. In short: Malawi is an african republic, that is about triple as big as Switzerland. Furthermore the country is next to one of the biggest softwater lakes that is called “lake Malawi”. to find out more about the country of Malawi, please visit the Wikiwebsite about Malawi.

Thin Clients for Polytechnic Library

Today Ramon and myself have taken some pictures of the Thin Clients, that will be brought to Malawi soon.

Thin clients

These S300 & B220 FUTRO Fujitsu-Siemens Thin Clients will be used for a LTSP (Linux Terminal Server Project) configuration together with 2 Intel Core 2 Duo Servers, that will be set up in the Library of the Polytechnic in Blantyre. Depending on the intentions of Mr. Thawani, the Librarian of the Polytechnic, they will be used for surfing the internet and browsing the database of the Library.

Linux chix open day at Polytechnic

Maganizo Monawe, a GNU/Linux System Administrator of The Polytechnic writes: “Linux Chix will be having an open day on 16th september at the malawi college for health sciences, blantyre campus. they requested if MOSS could help in patronizing the function. they have done the organisation. activities will start at 8.30 in the morning. I think it is an activity worth supporting.”

Moss seems to be still active and organizing activities. 🙂
